AR delivers a talk about the "contemporary housing question" at the Marx and the Aesthetics Conference in Amsterdam, 10-13 May. You find more information HERE

This talk will address Open Land communes in Northern California during the late 1960s, focusing on the escalating “code wars” that their attempts to abandon private property rights, normative forms of life, and other trappings of modernity and capitalism elicited from the State. What, it asks, might have motivated this portion of the American back-to-the-land movement to open their land to anyone who wished to settle? Why did they adopt practices of “voluntary primitivism” in the name of an ethics of care, both of the self and of the earth? And why did the State react so violently against them?

To coincide with a September 2009 forum on Canada’s military role in Afghanistan the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC announced plans to stage a series of Taliban-led attacks on a mock Afghan village to be erected in the embassy compound. While this proposed PR campaign was unique in terms of its stated function to engender greater respect for the efforts of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, the building and destruction of ersatz architectural sets for playing out the theatres of war is not. The utilisation of cinematic modes of production, specifically the design and creation of provisional architectures (better known as film-sets), has been inextricably linked to the operations of tactical-training and warfare from WWII onwards.

I will be discussing participation from an angle of labour discourse, arguing that participation has never been a grass?roots emancipatory practice, but a problematic practice of activating the working subject. Thus I examine participation as an immanent part of a post-fordist process of subjectivation – as an original tool and practice of governmentality.

Contemporary research on materiality in the contemporary world investigates collections of given, unimportant matter. Some idiosyncratic operations enable different architectures formed through the sole assemblage of insignificant material. Such assemblages propose different structures in different conditions; they might make sense as site-specific strategies. Remodeling and reordering insignificant elements build propositions or form utterances by orchestrating fragments. Architecture would then be defined as an alternative curatorial rationale.

The lecture takes up the event's imperative to "collectively building on the city" and asks how co-housing groups could become a truly reformistic practice within the Vienna practice of social housing.
Andreas Rumpfhuber's contribution to the Anti-Neo-Liberalism Conference at the TU Graz will be discussing the spatial neo-liberalism of cybernetics, its architectural application and the emancipatory hope: From the invention of Bürolandschaft (1959/60) to the affirmative performance »Mobile Office« (1969).

Michael Klein's and Andreas Rumpfhuber's contribution to the Branded Spaces Conference in Karlsruhe will be reading the Vienna Public Housing Model as a highly efficient, yet unprecedented instrument, for city-branding.
The contribution to the Design Activism Conference in Barcelona will be contesting the general assumption of design-activism to be per se resistant, dissident and/or oppositional. I will be outlining an understanding of design-activism as an inevitably performative practice shaped by and entangled within a – so called – post-fordist / late-capitalist / control society, that is not yet political, nor socially relevant.

‘Support Structures’ looks at the systems and structures that condition how we inhabit our environment, in order to open up new possibilities and propose reinventions. Support Structure is a 10-phase collaborative project (2003-2010) that proposes structures for “supporting” as its agenda.
This lecture addresses questions on forms of display, organisation, appropriation, dependency, and temporariness; it will consider spatial practice as a form of political imagination.

Deane Simpson will investigate the increasingly important role played by market instruments in the production of contemporary urbanism. In particular, he will focus critically on the impact of a more recent discipline of demographics that is preoccupied with the examination of population characteristics – including age, gender, race, education, and disposable income – as they are deployed predominantly in marketing-related activities. The seminar will focus on concrete cases of Sun Cities

The use of the concept of landscape within architectural discourse, during the 1940s and early 1950s, precedes the explosion of the use of the concept of ecology. An example of the use of the concept of landscape as a condensation of multiple meanings is to be found in Gyorgy Kepes's exhibition and publication "The New Landscape in Art and Science" (1956) as an experiment aimed at the redefinition of the creative field that included all the humanities and sciences.

As we take a further step into the shards of contemporaneity, uncertainty appears to be a ground condition in human activities: what is the shape of the relation between material space and contemporary inhabitation today? How can we understand the momentous shifts in notions of citizenship from an analysis of the concrete, material configurations of today’s territories, metropolis and extended urban areas?

Kick Off of the FWF-funded (www.fwf.ac.at) research project Architecture of Cybernetics of Organization.
In the next three years Andreas Rumpfhuber will work on a comprehensive and systematic documentation of the architectural works of German management consultants Wolfgang and Eberhard Schnelle and its trans-disciplinary team from the late 1950s until mid 1970s. The research project explores the very unique non-architects design-practice (1) by registering its specific design-method "cybernetics of organization", (2) by addressing its engagement with the cybernetic discourse in running a publishing house and (3) by analysing its invention - the "Bürolandschaften" [office-landscapes].
The ESF/HERANET-funded research project SCIBE - Scarcity and Creativity is officially starting its 3-years research circle.
